a little (little mix) mix

  • Media

I went through the entire year between 2016 – 2017 just solely listening to Little Mix, and not much of anything else. Before that, I was an iNdIe™ person (think Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, Blind Pilot, Frightened Rabbit, etc) and a show tunes (*jazz hands*) kind of person.

So, not so much Top 40.

I wish I could remember how I got into listening to Little Mix, but it was definitely right around when Shout Out To My Ex came out (along with the Glory Days album). I listened to that album, and then suddenly I’m listening to all of the previous albums and watching their journey through The X Factor.

These girls are such amazing vocalists and performers – sometimes they’re even better live (or ‘live’, as in the case of festival performances with backing tracks) and a cappella, which is insane considering that the produced and recorded tracks are just non-stop pop and fun.

(I say these girls and I mean the three remaining members, because we don’t talk about #her in this household 🤡)

Their tour performances, too, are phenomenal. You can tell how much fun they have on stage, and of performing with each other, as well as the sisterhood and love they have for each other. I had the privilege and pleasure to watch them on LM5: The Tour, on Halloween 2019 – right before the pandemic. For a quick minute, I was tempted to fly to London for a couple of days to watch them on their last tour, but ultimately the fiscal side of me won out.

In celebration of them performing their last show (for now) as they embark on their personal careers in this hiatus from the group, I’m just pulling together some videos that have wow-ed me over the years. I’m going to miss them as a unit, but I’m so excited to see how each of them are going to excel on their own too, while always having a home to go back to.

My favorite performances

  • Confetti (Acoustic) – The harmonies? The belting? The fact that they were doing this in the face of losing a member, and having to round out their voices to create a still-full sound? Holy shit.
  • Secret Love Song Pt. II – Listen, I will go to battle for any performance of this song. It’s rallied so much LGBTQ+ support, and genuinely propelled the girls to properly become allies to the community, and for that I will always love it
  • Touch (Acoustic) – The original pop version was a banger, and was my “first” single that I’d experienced from them. The way the acoustic version was arranged to showcase all of their voices? Just magic.
  • How You Doin’? – Not my favorite song on the album, but the live performances of this song always hype me up.
  • Dance With Somebody (cover) – They’ve done plenty of covers through the years, but I’ve always really enjoyed this one.

On nostalgia

Earlier this weekend, I decided to play Pokémon Blue on a whim. I haven’t thought about that game in well over a decade, possibly more, but I wore Psyduck socks last week, and there goes that train of thought.

My first interaction with the franchise, as with most people my age, was the animation series. I must have been 10 or 11 at that point, and I didn’t actually have a Game Boy to play the game with. Instead, I downloaded emulators and ROMs at that age and trying to get it to work on whatever that OS must have been then – 95? XP?

This next detail is a little fuzzy: I’m not sure why my memories of playing it were always just at my grandmother’s, where we would go every Sunday. I would have a solid block of four to five hours to “speed-run”, and I think the furthest I got was Vermilion City, before I had to shut it down to eat dinner and go home. The save function must not have worked on the emulator then, too, because it felt like I was trapped in that Sisyphean run every single week, and never getting to the end game.

But yes. This past weekend, I downloaded another emulator and got right to work. After the first few minutes of playing, I sped up the emulator and literally breezed through the game with mostly just Kadabra, though my starter (a Bulbasaur) did pretty well with its one-shot fights too.

It took me about a collective 12 hours to complete the game, I think — a far cry from the speed run world records, clearly! — and you know what? I’m glad I did nothing else this weekend and just dove right into the nostalgia of my childhood.

(And of course I caught Psyduck. Psy-ay-ay.)

A couple of TV recs + a movie (trilogy)!

  • Media

I haven’t watched television shows in a while1wow, tell that to my teenage self, devouring at least 20 weekly series at any one time, or actually sought out new movies to watch2something something about rewatching movies I have watched and loved to seek comfort in the familiarity but my brain has been taking a break this week.

Hence these content recs!

Girls5Eva

I got to see gifs of this on my Tumblr dashboard and did a double take because is that Sara Bareilles and Renée Elise Goldsberry on a TV show?? Yes, yes, and Goldsberry is 50, and I can only hope I look half as good as she does when I get there.

But sincerely — this is laugh out loud funny, peppered with nostalgia to my childhood (I was an early teen in the aughts), especially when the music groups of my teenage years have been reuniting and making new music. The theme song is so catchy and I’m still humming it, and I’m excited to be able to binge-watch the second season whenever it comes out.

Leverage: Redemption

Oh, Leverage. The five seasons of the original series are one of my most favorite seasons, and it’s something I put on in the background and know that it would make me feel like there is some justice in the world. I’ve said “where is the Leverage crew to get this guy?” at some of our real-world villains (billionaires, pharma bros…) too many times to not get excited about the new season.

I’m only really halfway through it, but by the first twenty minutes of the first episode, I was already heart-warmed and felt like I was coming home.

Fear Street

I watched the first two films with my friends virtually — I don’t think I would’ve watched it as a solo activity — and it was such a fun experience. Campy and pure entertainment, and already spawning so many theories and speculation about what the whole mythos is.

Watch as we get everything wrong when the third film comes out!

And of course, I’m very here for queer representation in media 💝

Have you been watching anything good? Let me know!

(and at once i knew i was not magnificent)

This is a music post, because I’m still taking life slow.  I call this my ‘writing stuff’ playlist, in which I do everything but.

  1. Run – Daughter
  2. Tip of my Tongue – The Civil Wars
  3. Set the Fire to the Third Bar – Snow Patrol ft. Martha Wainwright
  4. When I Go – Slow Club
  5. Blood Bank – Bon Iver
  6. Off I Go – Greg Laswell
  7. Alaska – Maggie Rogers
  8. Thunder Clatter – Wild Cub
  9. Challengers – The New Pornographers
  10. My Backwards Walk – Frightened Rabbit

There’s another version of this playlist that’s basically just all of Little Mix’s discography, Broadway recordings, and The Barden Bellas, so there’s that.
